Rising Fuel Prices Drive EV Adoption
With petrol costs steadily increasing, running petrol cars has become a significant concern for UAE residents. EVs offer a compelling solution by drastically reducing fuel expenses.
Charging an EV in the UAE costs approximately AED 0.40 per kWh, significantly less than the cost per kilometer for petrol cars, where fuel costs around AED 2.74 per liter.
Ahmed Almazrouei, an Emirati entrepreneur and early EV adopter since 2020, highlights the benefits: “The smooth, quiet drive is a huge difference from traditional cars, and the instant torque is a lot of fun.
Over time, I’ve also noticed the savings on fuel and maintenance. It’s a great feeling knowing that I’m contributing to reducing my carbon footprint while still enjoying a high-performance vehicle.”
Government Support and Expanding Infrastructure
The UAE government actively encourages EV adoption through incentives like green bank loans, insurance plans, attractive EV pricing, and green vehicle registration.

The Ministry of Energy mandates that 10% of federal ministries’ car fleets be electric, with a long-term goal of 20%. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) provides benefits such as free parking for EVs and free Salik tags.
The UAE is rapidly expanding its charging infrastructure, including ultra-fast chargers. Major providers like DEWA, Tesla, and ADNOC are actively increasing the network of charging stations.
Consumer Confidence on the Rise
A recent survey by Al-Futtaim Automotive revealed that 73% of UAE residents are confident that charging stations will be available every few kilometers by 2028, and 63% plan to make EVs their primary mode of transport by 2025.
Lower Maintenance and Environmental Benefits
EVs offer lower maintenance costs and produce zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to improved air quality and supporting the UAE’s clean energy and climate targets, including the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.
Challenges Remain
Challenges such as safety concerns, servicing costs, battery longevity, and resale value persist. Reaching the ambitious target of 50% EVs on UAE roads by 2050 will require continued regulatory support and infrastructure development.
Electric vehicles in the UAE offer a promising solution to reduce fuel costs and support environmental goals.
With increasing consumer interest, government incentives, and expanding charging infrastructure, EVs are poised to become a mainstream choice in the UAE’s automotive landscape.
