Profession Change on Qatar ID: A Comprehensive Guide for Residents

As Qatar continues to modernize and digitalize public services, the Ministry of Labour has introduced a streamlined process for residents seeking to update the profession listed on their Qatar ID (QID).

This change plays a vital role in aligning official records with an individual’s current professional status and can significantly impact access to services such as obtaining a driver’s license or qualifying for specific work-related permits.

Why the QID Profession Matters

The profession stated on the QID is more than just a job title—it often determines eligibility for various public services.

For example, some professions are not permitted to apply for a driving license, while others may be needed for visa applications, government procedures, or employment transitions.

Eligibility: Who Can Update Their Profession?

Profession updates are currently only available to residents under company sponsorship. Employees under such sponsorship can have their profession updated through a request initiated and completed by their employer.

On the other hand, those under family sponsorship—such as dependents listed as “Student,” “Housewife,” or other non-working roles—are not eligible for a profession change. Their QID profession will remain unchanged unless their sponsorship status also changes.

Step-by-Step Guide: How the Profession Change Process Works

The Ministry of Labour has provided a dedicated e-service titled “Amending Occupations on Work Permits” through its official portal.

The full process includes the following steps:

1. Initiation by Employer:
The application for a profession change must be submitted by the employer via the Ministry of Labour’s online portal using a smart card login.

2. Application Details Required:

  • Company’s commercial license number
  • Employee’s personal number
  • Profession (selected from an approved list)
  • Nationality
  • Academic qualifications
  • Professional practice certificates (if applicable)

3. Submission & Verification:
Once all required details and documents are submitted, the request will be forwarded to the relevant department for review. Employers can monitor progress via the “My Requests” section on the portal or by visiting any Labour Ministry branch.

4. Approval & Notification:
Upon approval, the Ministry of Labour internally communicates the update to the Ministry of Interior. An SMS confirmation will then be sent via Metrash, indicating that the QID is ready for reissuance.

5. QID Reprinting:
The company’s PRO (Public Relations Officer) can visit the General Directorate of Passports in Wadi Al Banat or any Government Services Centre to print the updated QID.

    Important Notes:

    • The above process applies only to employees remaining with the same employer.
    • If the profession change is associated with a job transfer or change of employer, the process may differ.
    • The Metrash2 app is no longer used for profession changes.
    • Processing time may vary based on the complexity of each case.

    Fees Involved

The online service itself is free of charge, but a QAR 200 fee is applicable for reprinting the updated QID.
