UAE Jobs: Can Employees Take Up to 6 Months of Sick Leave for Major Illness?

A recent inquiry has raised questions about the extent of sick leave available to employees in the UAE private sector, particularly for serious health issues.
Under the Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021, employees are entitled to a total of 90 days of sick leave per year after completing their probation period.

The breakdown of this leave is as follows:
- First 15 days: Full pay
- Next 30 days: Half pay
- Subsequent days: Unpaid leave
Employees must notify their employers within three working days of their illness and provide a medical certificate.
Additionally, if further leave is needed, employees can request unpaid leave with employer consent.
It’s crucial for employees to understand their entitlements and to communicate openly with their employers regarding their health needs.
This ensures compliance with labor laws while addressing personal health challenges.
