UAE Labour Law: What to Know About Working During Public Holidays

Dubai: As public holidays, such as the recent celebration of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, are observed in the UAE, many employees may find themselves asked to work during these designated days.
Under the UAE Labour Law, specifically Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, employees have specific rights regarding compensation for working on public holidays.

Employees are entitled to full pay on official public holidays as defined by the Cabinet. If required to work on such a day, they are entitled to either another day off or compensation, which includes their regular wage plus a minimum of 50% of their basic salary for that day.
Suneer Kumar, a senior associate at Al Suwaidi, emphasized that this compensation applies to all employees, regardless of their job category, provided the employer has requested them to work.
For employees seeking to understand their rights or file complaints regarding compensation, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) offers support through a hotline, mobile app, and online platforms.
This clarity on labour laws ensures that workers in the UAE are aware of their entitlements, especially during significant public holidays.
