UAE Jobs: Can Employers Assign Tasks Beyond Contracts?

A recent inquiry has raised concerns about the legality of employers assigning tasks that differ from those specified in employment contracts in the UAE.
According to Article 12 of Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021, employers cannot assign employees to work that is substantially different from their agreed role, except in emergencies or for rectifying mistakes.

While temporary assignments are permissible under specific conditions, they cannot exceed 90 days per year.
If an employee is asked to perform fundamentally different tasks without their written consent, they have the right to resign immediately without notice, as stated in Article 45(4) of the Employment Law.
Employees are encouraged to review their contracts and communicate any discrepancies to their employers.
If issues persist, they may seek assistance from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE).
