Dubai Police Urge Drivers to Avoid Tailgating: Dh400 Fine for Violators

Tailgating remains a significant concern for drivers in Dubai, contributing to increased risks of collisions and multi-vehicle accidents.
Despite ongoing warnings, many motorists continue to follow too closely, leaving insufficient space to react if the vehicle ahead slows down or stops unexpectedly.

To combat this dangerous behavior, Dubai Police are emphasizing the necessity of maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, utilizing advanced AI-powered radars to detect violators and impose fines.
Understanding Tailgating
Tailgating is defined as following another vehicle too closely, which can lead to serious accidents. This aggressive driving can cause unnecessary stress for the driver in front, increasing the chances of sudden maneuvers like abrupt braking or lane changes.
Such actions can trigger chain-reaction collisions, particularly on high-speed roads where reaction times are critical. Additionally, tailgating heightens tension among drivers, leading to distractions and risky behavior.
The Cost of Tailgating
Dubai Police have made it clear that failing to maintain a safe following distance can result in a hefty fine of Dh400. They stress that keeping a greater distance not only enhances safety but also reduces the likelihood of accidents.
“Maintaining a safe following distance is essential for your safety on the road,” said Dubai Police via their official social media account.
How to Maintain a Safe Following Distance
To prevent tailgating and ensure road safety, motorists should adhere to the “two-second rule”:
- Select a Reference Point: Identify a fixed point ahead, such as a sign or tree.
- Count Seconds: Once the vehicle in front passes that point, start counting.
- Adjust Distance: If you reach the same point in less than two seconds, you are following too closely and should increase your distance.
In adverse weather conditions, such as rain or fog, or when driving at higher speeds, it is advisable to increase this gap to three to four seconds.
Advanced Monitoring
Dubai Police employ advanced AI-powered radar systems to monitor and penalize traffic violations, including tailgating. These radars are strategically positioned across major roads and highways to ensure strict enforcement of road safety regulations.
The AI continuously analyzes driving patterns, detecting reckless behavior and issuing fines as necessary.
By following these guidelines and maintaining a safe distance, drivers can significantly reduce the risk of accidents, contributing to a safer driving environment for everyone on Dubai’s roads.
