SFDA to Penalize 996 Erring Establishments

Officials from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) have identified violations at 996 establishments during inspection tours conducted in April and May.
These efforts included 5,912 monitoring and investigation tours, covering 4,307 establishments across various regions of the Kingdom.

Inspection Outcomes
- Closures: 136 establishments were closed for not obtaining necessary licenses and for violations affecting product safety.
- Production Line Suspensions: 127 production lines were suspended.
- Seizures: A total of 1,750 types of products were seized and impounded.
These inspections aim to ensure compliance with approved regulations and elevate the quality of products in the market.

Notable Violations Identified
- Food Establishments: Raw materials of unknown origin were found, and several workers were employed without health certificates, leading to facility closures and punitive measures.
- Unlicensed Warehouses: Several warehouses were seized for illegally storing expired medical products. A total of 313,789 products were confiscated to protect consumers from unsafe items.
- Food Factory Violations: One food factory was found lacking a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) quality certificate and had issues like:
- Accumulation of spoiled meat in freezers.
- Mismatched production dates.
- Unsanitary conditions.
Joint Inspections
During joint inspections with the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (MODON), violations were detected at a factory under construction, including:
- Lack of SFDA licensing.
- Non-compliance with food safety regulations.
- Violations affecting safety and quality.
This led to the closure of the factory and production lines, as well as the precautionary recall of products pending safety analysis.
