UAE Sees Spike in Divorces, Some Within Hours or Days of Marriage

The UAE Ministry of Justice has unveiled troubling statistics indicating a significant increase in divorce rates, with some marriages ending as quickly as 24 hours after the wedding.

In 2024, a total of 448 divorces were recorded across four emirates, including 217 in Sharjah, 139 in Ajman, 70 in Fujairah, and 22 in Umm Al Quwain.

The report highlights that several marriages dissolved for seemingly trivial reasons, with numerous cases occurring within a week of the ceremony. Notably, one divorce was finalized just five days post-wedding, and others occurred after seven days.

The data also reveals that long-term marriages are ending, with some couples parting ways after 45 to 47 years.

Legal experts and family specialists attribute the trend of early divorces to factors such as poor partner selection, personality clashes, and a lack of conflict resolution skills.

They also point to the detrimental influence of social media and family interference as contributing factors to marital disputes.

Authorities emphasize the need for community education to promote marital stability and equip couples with essential skills for conflict management.

Under the UAE Personal Status Law, expatriates can refer to their home country’s laws regarding marriage and divorce, provided it serves their best interests.

Experts stress the importance of commitment in marriage and the need to address the misconception that divorce is an easy solution to marital problems.

The recent amendments to the Federal Personal Status Law aim to enhance family stability and support social cohesion.
