Saudi Artist Emtethal Alawami Showcases Themes of Prayer and Spirituality in Bahrain Exhibition

Saudi artist Emtethal Alawami has unveiled her latest exhibition, “101 Hymns,” in Bahrain, highlighting deep themes of memory, nostalgia, and the connection between past and present.
The exhibition features a captivating array of photographs, digital art, and videos that depict scenes of prayer, creating an immersive experience for viewers.
Alawami, hailing from Qatif, shared that the inspiration for her exhibition came from her late father. She fondly recalled observing his gestures during prayer and the way he handled his prayer beads, which left a lasting impression on her.
“The movement of his fingers between the beads and the sound of his voice embodied moments of peace and reassurance,” she explained. These memories reflect a deep connection with oneself, providing space for reflection and a return to one’s true essence.
The prayer rosary, a spiritual symbol used across various cultures for over 3,000 years, represents a means to regain tranquility in the chaos of daily life. Alawami’s work illustrates how prayer and tasbih (the act of glorifying God) can serve as a refuge amid life’s pressures.
“These moments teach us patience and serenity, with the gentle sound of the prayer beads calming the soul,” she noted. After a period of mourning her father’s passing 18 months ago, Alawami felt compelled to complete the exhibition in his honor.

“He was my first supporter, and this project reflects my love and pride for his spiritual journey, which I hope to share with others,” she remarked.
Alawami’s artistic journey began early in her life, driven by her fascination with the possibilities of art. She graduated in 1996 from King Saud University in Riyadh, where she studied art education. “My artistic journey began with a moment of introspection, recognizing the beauty in everyday life and the power of visual storytelling,” she stated.
Throughout her career, Alawami has explored various styles and mediums, allowing her to refine her artistic voice and create a distinct identity.
She integrates cultural narratives shaped by her experiences into her work, demonstrating the unique nature of Arabian art that fuses traditional techniques with contemporary themes.
The artist emphasized the significant growth of the art community in the Arab world, particularly in Saudi Arabia, where contemporary artists are gaining recognition.
The government, through the Ministry of Culture, actively supports the arts, fostering a vibrant scene that encourages collaboration across borders.
“As a Saudi woman and artist, I feel a profound responsibility to authentically represent my community. This journey, while challenging, is rewarding as it highlights the importance of creativity and expression in enriching society,” Alawami concluded.
