According to the Dubai Police’s ‘E-Crime Hub,’ hackers often exploit open networks to intercept sensitive data, install malware, or impersonate users.
With many individuals relying on digital services such as e-banking and online shopping, the importance of protecting personal information cannot be overstated.
Several warning signs have been highlighted by authorities when connecting to public Wi-Fi. Users should be cautious of networks with similar names, those that do not require a password, and pop-ups asking for personal information before allowing access.
To ensure safe browsing, Dubai Police recommend the following precautions:
- Verify Network Names: Always confirm the official Wi-Fi network name with venue staff before connecting.
- Avoid Sensitive Transactions: Refrain from accessing banking accounts or work emails while on public Wi-Fi. Instead, use mobile data or wait for a secure connection.
- Disable Unnecessary Features: Turn off file sharing, AirDrop, and Bluetooth when not in use to prevent unauthorized access to your device.
- Use a VPN: If you must connect to public Wi-Fi, always use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your data and protect your privacy.

Dubai Police emphasize that while general browsing can be safe on public Wi-Fi, taking these precautions is essential to safeguard personal information.
