95% of Workers in Saudi Arabia Covered by Basic Healthcare Services: GASTAT

Nearly 95% of workers in Saudi Arabia enjoy coverage of basic healthcare services, according to the 2024 Statistics Bulletin on Health and Safety at the Workplace released by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) on Tuesday.
The bulletin highlights notable progress in workplace healthcare, while also shedding light on occupational injury rates and safety practices across the Kingdom.

Key Findings
- Occupational Injuries: Among workers aged 15 and above, the rate reached 245.7 non-fatal injuries and 1.1 fatal injuries per 100,000 workers, excluding road traffic accidents.
- Training & Safety:
- 39% received training on occupational health and safety procedures.
- 40.4% had access to a dedicated workplace health and safety office.
- 32.2% underwent periodic medical examinations by employers.

- Hazard Exposure:
- 5.4% operate dangerous machinery.
- 2.1% handle chemicals.
- 1% are exposed to heavy metals.
- Health Issues Reported (past 12 months):
- Stress (2.1%) was the most common issue.
- Eye and vision problems (2%) followed.
- 79.5% of workers reported no work-related health problems.
Data Sources
GASTAT noted that the findings are based on self-reported survey data collected during the 2024 National Health Survey through household field visits. Occupational injury rates, however, were calculated using registry data from the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health, combined with GASTAT’s 2024 population estimates.
