The Al Mirzam Period: A Test of Endurance
The Al Mirzam period, which began with the rising of the Al Mirzam star (Sirius) on July 29, has historically brought some of the highest temperatures of the year.
This summer, the National Centre of Meteorology recorded a staggering 51.8°C in Al Ain on August 1, marking it as one of the hottest days in recent memory.
What to Expect Now
With the end of the peak summer, temperatures are expected to drop slightly. On August 10, regions like Gasyoura will see lows of 29°C, while Abu Dhabi and Dubai will experience highs ranging from 34°C to 44°C.
However, internal areas may still reach highs of 47°C, suggesting that while the peak may be over, the heat is far from finished.
A Glimpse of Hope: Rain on the Horizon
In a welcome change, the forecast predicts rain from August 10 to August 12, which could further help in lowering temperatures. Recent rainfall has already provided brief moments of respite, with showers recorded in Fujairah and Al Ain.
An orange alert was issued earlier this month due to intense rains, demonstrating the unpredictable nature of summer weather in the region.
Health Concerns Amidst the Heat
As the temperatures remain high, health experts are warning of an increase in heat-related incidents. Many residents have called for more flexible work arrangements, suggesting a shift to remote or hybrid working models to avoid the challenges of commuting in extreme heat.
Doctors emphasize the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding direct sun exposure during the hottest parts of the day.
While the peak summer period may have ended, UAE residents should remain prepared for the ongoing heat.
With the promise of rain and cooler temperatures on the horizon, there is hope for a more manageable summer as the region transitions into the cooler months.
