Tragic Toll: 384 Lives Lost on UAE Roads in 2024, Dubai Records Highest at 158

In a concerning report, the UAE Ministry of Interior has revealed that road accidents resulted in 384 fatalities in 2024, marking a 9% increase from the previous year. Notably, Dubai recorded the highest number of deaths, with 158 lives lost, while Abu Dhabi followed with 123 fatalities.
The data indicates that a staggering 98% of these incidents occurred under good weather conditions. In total, injuries from road accidents rose to 6,062, with major accidents reaching 4,748—both figures reflecting an 8% increase.

Among the deceased, 223 individuals died in accidents involving light vehicles, and 67 in motorcycle-related crashes. The most common causes of these tragedies included distracted driving, sudden deviations, and tailgating, contributing to 68% of fatalities and 62% of injuries.
Fridays and evenings were identified as the most perilous times on the roads, with 63 fatalities reported on Fridays alone.
The most dangerous roads included Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, where 40 deaths occurred, followed by Emirates Street and Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Road.

A significant increase in driving licences issued was noted, with 383,086 new licences granted in 2024.
RoadSafetyUAE’s Thomas Edelmann emphasized the urgent need for public and private stakeholders to address the rising accident rates, particularly among young motorists aged 19-29, who account for 40% of fatalities.
Edelmann called for enhanced awareness campaigns and initiatives to improve road safety, highlighting the role of schools and employers in educating young drivers.
