Saudi Arabia Urges Meningitis Vaccination for Umrah Pilgrims Before Ramadan 2025

Saudi health authorities are advising all Muslims planning to perform Umrah during Ramadan to receive the meningitis vaccine at least 10 days before traveling to Mecca.

This preventive measure aims to enhance immunity against infections in crowded places.

The Ministry of Health emphasized that the vaccine offers protection for five years, supporting both individual and public health during the busy Umrah season.

Those vaccinated within the last five years do not require revaccination.

In addition to vaccination, authorities recommend that worshippers follow other safety measures, such as:

  • Regular hand washing
  • Wearing face masks in crowded areas

Ramadan is typically the peak season for Umrah at the Grand Mosque, and preparations are underway to accommodate the anticipated influx of pilgrims.

Umrah can be performed year-round, with the current season having begun in late June after the Hajj pilgrimage. Key rituals include Tawaf—encircling the Holy Kaaba seven times—and Sa’i—walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah.
