Familiarizing yourself with these rules not only helps you avoid penalties but also ensures a safer driving experience for everyone on the road.

1. Speed Limits – No Grace Speed Allowance

Unlike other UAE emirates that often allow a grace limit of 20 km/h over the posted speed limit, Abu Dhabi has eliminated this allowance since 2018. Any speed above the designated limit will result in a fine.

2. Minimum Speed Limit on E311 Highway

On Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road (E311), certain lanes have a minimum speed requirement. While many assume that driving at 110 km/h is acceptable, specific sections enforce a minimum speed of 120 km/h.

From May 1, 2023, Abu Dhabi Police introduced a Dh400 fine for drivers who fail to maintain this minimum speed in the left two lanes. The third lane, designated for heavy vehicles, is exempt from this requirement.

3. Road Alert System

Abu Dhabi’s road alert system utilizes traffic signs with red, blue, and yellow flashing lights to warn drivers of upcoming incidents and adverse weather. Red and blue lights indicate accidents, while yellow lights warn of hazardous conditions such as fog or dust. These signals are visible from up to 200 meters away.

4. AI-Powered Traffic Radars and Cameras

Advanced AI technology is integrated into Abu Dhabi’s traffic monitoring systems to enhance road safety. AI-powered radars and cameras detect violations at pedestrian crossings, intersections, and road exits. Solar-powered ‘EXIT-I’ devices identify motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians, while other systems monitor various traffic violations.

5. Smart Gates
Abu Dhabi’s smart gates do more than display traffic warnings—they are part of an intelligent system that automatically captures speed limit violations, vehicles with expired registrations, and unsafe driving behaviors.
