The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing in Saudi Arabia has introduced a new set of penalties designed to raise health and safety standards in the Kingdom’s food sector.

Among the most significant measures is a SR5,000 fine for smoking in restaurants and food outlets, unless in designated areas.

Protecting Public Health

The regulations target unhygienic practices, deceptive sales, and violations of food safety rules, reflecting the Kingdom’s efforts to strengthen consumer protection and enhance transparency in the food supply chain.

“These measures aim to safeguard public health, protect consumers, and ensure food establishments meet the highest hygiene standards,” the ministry emphasized.

Key Penalties Announced

The new fines cover a wide range of violations in both food preparation and delivery services:

  • SR5,000 – Smoking in unauthorized areas of food establishments.
  • SR2,000 – Workers caught spitting or touching nose and mouth in food preparation zones.
  • SR1,000 – Not wearing a face mask in food preparation areas.
  • SR1,000 – Failure to cover the head while handling food.
  • SR1,000 – Selling frozen fruit juice while falsely claiming it is freshly prepared.
  • SR500 – Food delivery workers not wearing the official company uniform.

Call for Compliance

The ministry urged restaurants, cafes, food outlets, and delivery companies across the Kingdom to comply fully with the updated rules to avoid penalties and to uphold public trust.
