How UAE Residents Can Apply for Entry Permits After Six Months Abroad

DUBAI: UAE residents who have been outside the country for over six months can now apply for an entry permit to return, according to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP).
This initiative is aimed at expatriates who have extended their stay abroad due to medical treatment, work, or study.

While remaining outside the UAE for more than six months typically results in the cancellation of residency permits, the new entry permit allows eligible residents to reactivate their residency status and re-enter the UAE.
To apply, residents must submit their application from outside the country, ensuring that their residency permit has at least 30 days of validity left.
Applications can only be made after 180 days of being abroad, and a justification for the extended stay must be provided. There is a fine of Dh100 for every 30 days spent outside the UAE beyond the six-month limit.
Certain categories of residents, including holders of gold, blue, and green residency permits, as well as expatriate students and public sector workers sent abroad for training, are exempt from the six-month rule.
Applications can be submitted through the ICP smart services platform or at designated typing centers and customer happiness centers, except for Dubai residents, who need to contact the GDRFA-Dubai for guidance.
For more information, residents are advised to consult the ICP toll-free number at 600522222.
