Key Details of the New Regulations

  • Validity Period: Foreign visitors may use an international or foreign driving licence to drive in Saudi Arabia for up to one year from their date of entry, or until the licence expires — whichever comes first.
  • Vehicle Category Compliance: It is essential that the driving licence corresponds to the category of the vehicle being driven.
  • Translation Requirement: All foreign licences must be translated by an accredited body to ensure that the information is accurate and clear.

Exceptions for GCC Citizens

The new rules do not apply to citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Residents of GCC nations can drive in Saudi Arabia using a valid licence issued in their home country without needing a temporary Saudi licence. They can use their foreign licence for its full validity period.

However, it is important to note that international driving permits issued within GCC countries are not valid for cross-border driving within GCC states, including Saudi Arabia.

These updates aim to streamline the driving process for foreign visitors while ensuring compliance with local regulations.
