UAE Residents Hit by New Email Scam: Fake Invoices and Remote Access

UAE residents are increasingly falling victim to a new wave of email scams that involve fake invoices and the potential for remote computer access.

These deceptive emails, often masquerading as communication from well-known companies like McAfee Security and PayPal, claim that charges of around 399 (Dh1,400)or399 (Dh1,400) or 399 (Dh1,400) or 599 (Dh2,200) have already been made and will soon appear on the recipient’s account.

Victims are urged to act quickly to cancel these supposed transactions, typically within 24 hours. Upon calling a US-based number provided in the email, scammers guide victims through steps that grant them remote access to their computers, allowing them to steal sensitive personal and financial information without the victims’ knowledge.

Authorities have intensified their warnings following a crackdown on phone-based fraud, which saw Dubai Police arrest 494 individuals last year in connection with 406 cases targeting banking customers.

Sharjah Police have also heightened cybercrime monitoring, leading to the arrest of two men who defrauded victims of over Dh3 million.

Officials stress that legitimate companies will never request remote access to computers or send invoices from personal email accounts. They encourage the public to be cautious and to report any suspicious emails immediately.

Residents who suspect they have been targeted can report incidents through various platforms, including the Ministry of Interior’s eCrime Portal and Dubai Police’s eCrime website.
