UAE Residents Push for 6 AM Work Start: Here’s Why

In a growing trend, some residents of the UAE are calling for a shift in work schedules, proposing a start time as early as 6 AM.

This movement is gaining traction among those who cite personal routines, such as early morning workouts and Fajr prayers, as reasons for wanting to begin their workday sooner.

For many, starting work at 6 AM would allow them to finish by early afternoon, freeing up time for family, rest, and errands. Amina Al Hammadi, a Dubai resident, highlights the benefits of this schedule.

“I wake up for Fajr around 4 AM. By the time I’m done with my prayer and breakfast, I’m ready to go. But I often have to wait hours before work starts,” she shared. “Finishing early would be a game changer, especially during the hot summer months.”

Similarly, Alex, an American expat working in sales, appreciates the productivity boost that an earlier start could provide. “I’m fully alert by 6 AM after my morning run and gym session,” he explained.

“Waiting for the workday to begin feels like a waste of energy. Getting done by 2 or 3 PM would allow me to recharge for the evening.”

The push for earlier work hours is supported by health experts. Dr. Reem Al Marzouqi, an occupational health specialist, notes the physiological benefits of aligning work schedules with natural energy cycles.

“People who wake up early often exhibit higher cortisol levels in the morning, which enhances alertness and focus,” she explained. “This shift could lead to increased productivity and reduced reliance on caffeine.”

Moreover, adjusting work hours to start earlier could help mitigate the effects of extreme heat in the UAE. By finishing work before peak temperatures, employees may experience less heat-related stress and fatigue.

However, Dr. Al Marzouqi cautions that this approach may not suit everyone. “Flexibility is crucial. Not everyone is a morning person, and forcing a 6 AM start could lead to increased fatigue for night owls,” she said.

She recommends that companies consider trial programs to find the best schedule for their workforce.

As this conversation continues to unfold, it highlights a growing desire among UAE residents for a work-life balance that accommodates their lifestyles and enhances overall well-being.
