Egypt and Saudi Arabia to Build $4 Billion Red Sea ‘Moses Bridge’

Egypt and Saudi Arabia are set to construct a $4 billion bridge across the Red Sea, aiming to enhance regional connectivity and commercial ties.

This ambitious project, known as the “Moses Bridge,” will connect the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh to Ras Alsheikh Hamid in Saudi Arabia via Tiran Island, spanning approximately 32 kilometers.

Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir announced that the project is ready for implementation, with all planning completed. He emphasized that the bridge will facilitate trade and travel between Asia and Africa, significantly reducing travel time to around 30 minutes by car.

Anticipated benefits include a substantial increase in tourism, with the number of Saudi visitors to Egypt projected to rise from 300,000 to over 1.2 million annually. Local economies, particularly in the Sinai Peninsula, are expected to thrive due to improved access.

The bridge is also seen as a catalyst for increased trade between Africa and Asia, praised by Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as a major development. It aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy to diversify its economy, promoting infrastructure and tourism.

While the project enjoys considerable support, environmentalists have raised concerns about its potential impact on the fragile marine ecosystem of the Red Sea, particularly around the Strait of Tiran. In response, the planning team has committed to using environmentally friendly construction methods.

Construction timelines remain unclear, but Saudi officials estimate completion could take up to eight years, given the technical challenges posed by the region’s delicate environment and seismic activity. The Moses Bridge symbolizes a bold step towards enhancing Middle Eastern cooperation and infrastructure development.
