Authorities have identified distracted driving as a leading cause of accidents on UAE roads. In 2024, Abu Dhabi Police highlighted eating while driving as one of the most dangerous habits, alongside mobile phone use.
Even brief distractions can lead to dangerous driving behaviors, such as swerving or delayed reactions.
To combat this issue, the UAE imposes strict penalties for distracted driving:
- Fine: Dh800
- Black Points: Four points added to the driver’s license (accumulating 24 points can lead to court proceedings and possible license suspension)
- Vehicle Impoundment: 30 days in Dubai, a policy implemented since October 2024
In 2024, Dubai Police reported over 648,000 traffic violations, many related to distracted driving. Authorities utilize AI-powered traffic radars to monitor and detect such violations effectively.
Police warn that all forms of mobile phone use while driving, including hands-free devices, can increase accident risk.
Drivers are advised to only use their phones when safely parked and to avoid distractions to ensure road safety.
