The atmosphere at the Dubai Gold Souq, the heart of the UAE’s gold trade, has turned somber in the wake of the tragic Air India flight crash that occurred last Thursday shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad.
This incident has cast a shadow over the gold market, where many traders have deep-rooted connections to Gujarat, particularly Ahmedabad, a pivotal sourcing hub for gold and diamonds.

A Community in Mourning
The emotional toll is palpable among shopkeepers and workers at the Souq, as many hail from Gujarat and have personal ties to the region affected by the crash.
Abdul Salam K.P., Vice-Chairman of Malabar Gold & Diamonds, shared, “While we source much of our jewelry from Surat, our main suppliers are based in Ahmedabad. The gold trade here is feeling the weight of this tragedy.”
The impact is not just felt through direct connections; the entire community is grieving. A bullion dealer noted, “Even if they didn’t know anyone on that flight, the crash is a personal tragedy for many here.”
With numerous staff members from Ahmedabad working in the Souq, the tragedy resonates deeply within the community.

The Ripple Effect on Business
Gujarat is renowned globally for its diamond cutting and polishing, making it a vital supplier for jewelry seen in stores throughout the UAE.
The recent crash has led to a noticeable drop in morale among employees. Reports indicate that some group tours from India, particularly those featuring older visitors, have been canceled, impacting foot traffic at the Souq.
Anil Dhanak, Managing Director of Kanz Jewels, remarked, “Buying gold from the Dubai Gold Souq is a must for many visitors on group tours.
Despite any price, they prioritize spending on gold during their trips.” However, with the recent tragedy, there has been a shift in sentiment that could affect future sales.
Navigating Uncertainty
Traders are bracing for more potential cancellations as concerns rise over both the flight crash and regional tensions. Salam expressed, “It’s been a tough few days, and we’re expecting further cancellations.”
The Dubai Gold Souq, typically bustling with eager tourists and locals alike, now faces challenges in maintaining its vibrant atmosphere amid this collective grief.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the crash, the resilience and solidarity of the traders and workers at the Souq remain evident.
They are committed to supporting one another during this difficult time, hoping for healing and a return to the lively spirit that defines the heart of Dubai’s gold trade.
