How to Comply with UAE Media Law: Influencers Now Need Two Licences

DUBAI: Influencers and content creators in the UAE must now secure two licences to operate legally under the updated UAE Media Law, which came into effect on May 29, 2025.

This new regulation mandates that all social media influencers involved in commercial activities obtain both a commercial licence and a media licence.

According to the UAE Media Council, a valid trade licence—either a business or freelance licence—is required before applying for a media licence.

This change aims to ensure compliance and regulate the influencer industry more effectively.

The trade licence is typically issued by a Free Zone authority or the Department of Economic Development (DED), allowing influencers to earn money through brand deals, promotions, and product sales. Licensing fees range from AED 5,000 to AED 15,000, depending on the emirate or Free Zone.

After obtaining the trade licence, influencers must apply for a media licence from the UAE Media Council.

This licence, which costs AED 1,000 annually, is essential for providing advertising or media content and includes options for temporary permits for visiting content creators.

Non-compliance with these new regulations can lead to significant penalties, with fines reaching up to AED 1 million.

Additionally, the UAE Media Council has the authority to monitor and remove content that violates local laws, reinforcing the need for influencers to adhere to strict content standards.

As the influencer landscape evolves, these licensing requirements reflect the UAE’s commitment to maintaining a safe and regulated digital environment.
