Research Opportunities

Tariq Aba Al-Khail, the official spokesperson of SGS, noted that the organization offers opportunities for researchers in earth sciences, archaeology, and paleobiology to conduct in-depth studies in these caves.

The SGS is committed to providing accurate geological data and forming partnerships with academic and research institutions to enhance community awareness of these valuable natural resources.

Ongoing Discoveries

  • The SGS has already identified hundreds of caves and is focusing on those with significant scientific or economic potential.
  • Eng. Mahmoud Al-Shanti, a geological cave expert, described the diversity of these caves as exceptional. They include:
    • Limestone Caves: Formed in ancient marine environments.
    • Basalt Caves: Located within volcanic lava fields.
    • Sandstone Caves: Distributed across various regions of the country.

Exploration efforts continue, with indications of caves extending over four kilometers below the Earth’s surface.

Detailed findings are expected to be shared with the public as part of ongoing scientific discoveries.

This focus on cave research not only provides insight into Saudi Arabia’s geological history but also supports the broader goals of sustainable tourism and environmental conservation.
