Dubai Launches Traffic Unit for E-Scooter and Cycling Violations

Dubai authorities have announced the establishment of a new Personal Mobility Monitoring Unit aimed at enhancing traffic safety for cyclists and e-scooter riders.

This initiative, developed in collaboration between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police, will focus on ensuring compliance with traffic rules and safety standards on designated cycling lanes and e-scooter tracks.

The unit will be actively stationed across key bicycle lanes and main streets that connect soft mobility zones. Its personnel will work to enforce existing regulations and promote public awareness regarding safe riding practices.

Offenders will face penalties under current traffic laws, which include fines of up to Dh300 for violations such as riding on public roads and failing to wear safety gear.

The move comes in response to a significant increase in the use of personal mobility devices, with bicycle trips rising from 44 million in 2023 to 46.6 million in 2024, and e-scooter trips increasing from 30 million to 32.3 million during the same period.

However, concerns have also grown due to rising accident rates, with 254 incidents reported last year, leading to 10 fatalities and 259 injuries.

In light of these concerns, road safety experts are calling for stricter regulations and greater enforcement.

The RTA and Dubai Police are committed to improving safety measures as part of the broader Traffic Safety Strategy 2022-26.
