UAE Requires WPS for Domestic Worker Salaries

In a significant move to enhance the rights of domestic workers, the UAE has officially mandated the Wage Protection System (WPS) for this workforce.
This system, recently confirmed by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), enables employers to process wages electronically through banks and approved financial institutions, ensuring timely and secure payments.

Key Details of the WPS
The WPS aims to streamline wage payments, making it easier for domestic workers to receive their salaries on time. Under the new regulations, employers must pay the monthly wage within ten working days from the due date, with strict penalties for non-compliance.
If wages are not processed through the WPS within one month of the due date, employers risk having their files suspended.
Benefits of the WPS
- Proof of Payment: Employers have a reliable method to demonstrate wage payments.
- Timely Disbursement: Guarantees that workers receive their salaries promptly, fostering a stable employer-worker relationship.
- Multiple Payment Options: Workers can receive wages through cash transfers or electronic methods via approved institutions.
Who is Affected?
As of April 1, the WPS is mandatory for specific professions, including private trainers, teachers, caregivers, representatives, and agricultural engineers. Other roles such as housekeepers and nannies are optional but encouraged to register under the system.
Compliance and Registration
Employers are urged to register in the WPS and process wages accordingly. Required documents include Emirates IDs for both the employer and the domestic worker, along with registration with an authorized WPS agent.
The MOHRE’s proactive approach includes regular notifications to remind employers of their obligations, ensuring that all domestic workers benefit from this protective measure.
This new regulation marks a pivotal step towards improving the working conditions of domestic workers in the UAE, promoting fairness and transparency in wage payments.
As the country continues to evolve its labor laws, the implementation of the WPS stands out as a crucial development in safeguarding the rights of one of its most vulnerable workforces.
