Motorists Trigger 271 Accidents by Running Red Lights Across the UAE

According to a recent report from the Ministry of Interior, running red lights was the leading cause of traffic accidents in the UAE for 2024, resulting in 271 incidents nationwide.

Abu Dhabi recorded the highest number of accidents at 153, followed by Dubai with 111. Other emirates reported fewer incidents, including three in Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al-Quwain, and one in Sharjah.

Motorists caught jumping red lights face severe penalties under UAE Traffic Law, including a fine of Dh1,000, 12 black points, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the cost to release an impounded vehicle is set at Dh50,000.

The report also highlighted that 67 of the accidents involved unlicensed drivers, with Abu Dhabi again leading with 55 cases. Additionally, 223 accidents were attributed to drivers merging onto main roads without ensuring they were clear.

The Ministry emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic laws and prioritizing safety to reduce road accidents. Stricter enforcement and awareness campaigns are critical to preventing further tragedies on the roads.
