A Legacy Woven in Silk and Faith

The Kingdom’s commitment to the Kiswa stretches back nearly a century. In 1927, King Abdulaziz Al Saud established the first specialized workshop to produce this sacred covering.

Half a century later, in 1977, a modern factory was inaugurated, paving the way for greater expansion while preserving time-honored traditions.

Under the leadership of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the facility was renamed the King Abdulaziz Complex and placed under the supervision of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.

While the factory has embraced modern technology, from electronic looms to precision equipment, its mission remains firmly rooted in spirituality and reverence for its sacred purpose.

Inside the Complex

A visit to the complex provides Muslims with a rare opportunity to witness the delicate artistry behind one of the Islamic world’s most revered symbols. More than 200 skilled artisans dedicate themselves to this noble task, working across specialized departments that include:

  • Silk weaving
  • Hand and machine embroidery
  • Gold threadwork
  • Printing
  • Final assembly

Visitors can observe each step of the process, from weaving pure silk to the final stitching of Quranic inscriptions, all culminating in the annual unveiling of the Kiswa.

The Kiswa Ceremony

The ceremonial replacement of the Kiswa has been a tradition for centuries. Historically, it took place on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, coinciding with the day of Arafah. In recent years, however, the event was moved to the 1st of Muharram to better suit preservation needs and operational requirements.

This deeply spiritual moment continues to resonate with Muslims worldwide, symbolizing reverence, renewal, and unity in faith.
