The UAE, like many nations, has specific regulations governing what can be carried into its borders. These rules apply not only to food but also to medications, vapes, e-cigarettes, and other items deemed hazardous, such as batteries and flammable materials.

For many Indian expatriates returning to the UAE after summer vacations or visitors from India, it’s customary to pack homemade delicacies.

However, travelers must comply with guidelines set by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which prohibits or restricts certain items.

Food Items to Watch Out For

While some foods may be allowed in checked baggage, they might not be permitted in carry-on luggage. Here are key restrictions:

  • Prohibited Items:
    • Copra (dried coconut)
    • Coconut crushed (dry coconut)
  • Restricted Items:
    • All spices in powder form, including chili (not allowed in carry-on but permitted in checked baggage)
    • Coconut (not allowed in carry-on, but acceptable in checked baggage)
  • Permitted Items:
    • Ghee (clarified butter) and cooking oil are allowed in cabin baggage under liquid restrictions, with a limit of 5 kg in checked baggage.
    • Pickles are allowed, though chili pickle is restricted to checked baggage.

Travelers should also note that items like paan (betel leaves) and cooked food are not permitted into the UAE.

Medication Guidelines

When it comes to medications, travelers must be cautious. Anyone bringing controlled medications into the UAE must secure approval from the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) before traveling.

It’s essential to consult with your doctor to confirm whether your prescribed medications fall under controlled substances.

For non-controlled and over-the-counter medications, prior approval is not necessary, but carrying a prescription for any medication is advisable.

Travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these regulations and check with their airline if in doubt. Staying informed not only ensures compliance with customs regulations but also enhances the overall travel experience.

For further assistance, contacting the nearest UAE embassy or consulate can provide additional clarity on bringing food and medications into the country.
