The General Directorate of Traffic in Saudi Arabia has issued a stern warning regarding the dangers of driving on road shoulders, sidewalks, or in prohibited lanes.

Penalties for Violations

According to the authority, violations of these regulations can result in fines ranging from SR 1,000 to SR 2,000, as specified in the official schedule of violations.

Drivers are urged to remain within designated lanes and to avoid using shoulders or sidewalks, except in emergency situations.

Dangers of Mobile Phone Use

Additionally, the Directorate emphasized that using a mobile phone while driving is a leading cause of road accidents. Distractions from mobile devices can result in:

  • Loss of focus
  • Running red lights
  • Veering off lanes
  • Losing control of the vehicle
  • Failing to notice pedestrians or sudden road hazards

Motorists are reminded that penalties for mobile phone use while driving range from SR 500 to SR 900, depending on the circumstances and the assessment by traffic officers.

The authority stated, “Such practices not only violate the law but endanger lives — including your own.” Drivers are encouraged to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic regulations to ensure the well-being of all road users.
