SFDA’s New Food Rules to Be in Force from July 1

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has announced that new technical regulations for food will take effect on July 1, 2025. These regulations aim to enhance food transparency and provide consumers with essential information to make informed nutritional decisions.

Key Regulations
Nutritional Information Requirements
- Menu Labeling: Food establishments will be required to display detailed nutritional information on their menus, including:
- A ‘saltshaker’ label next to meals high in sodium.
- Disclosure of caffeine content in beverages.
- Indication of the estimated time required to burn off the calories from a meal.
- Applicability: These requirements apply to all menus, including physical and online menus, as well as online food ordering platforms.

Health Promotion Goals
The SFDA aims to:
- Promote healthier food options.
- Encourage a balanced lifestyle.
- Help consumers track their salt and caffeine intake according to approved health recommendations:
- Sodium Intake: WHO advises adults to limit sodium intake to no more than 5 grams of salt per day (approximately one teaspoon).
- Caffeine Intake: Recommended limit for adults is 400 mg per day and 200 mg for pregnant women.
