How to Keep UAE WhatsApp Users Aware of Hacking Risks?

Dubai: WhatsApp users in the UAE are being urged to strengthen their account security as cybercriminals increasingly target the messaging platform for illicit activities.
According to Seifallah Jedidi, Head of Consumer Channel at META, hackers exploit vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access to accounts, which can then be used for spam distribution and sophisticated scams.

Cybercriminals typically use two methods to compromise accounts. One involves adding a device to an existing account through the ‘Linked devices’ feature, allowing the attacker to access conversations without the user’s knowledge.
The second method entails re-registering the account on the hacker’s device, effectively locking the original user out.
Jedidi emphasized the importance of protecting personal information shared on messaging apps, which often includes sensitive details about relationships and work.
Users are advised to take immediate action if they notice unusual activity, such as receiving replies to messages they did not send.
To enhance security, experts recommend the following measures:
- Enable Two-Step Verification: Activate this feature in WhatsApp settings to create a six-digit PIN.
- Never Share Your PIN or Codes: Be cautious, as scammers often request these details.
- Use Passkeys: Consider WhatsApp’s new passkey support for added security.
- Set Up a Backup Email: Link a recovery email to your account for added protection.
- Strengthen Email Security: Ensure your email has a strong password and enable two-factor authentication.
- Beware of SIM Swap Scams: Contact your mobile carrier in person to check for unauthorized SIMs or call-forwarding settings.
Jedidi also noted that the effectiveness of these measures increases when devices are protected from malware.
Users are encouraged to install comprehensive security solutions to safeguard their personal and professional communications against cyber threats.
