UAE Limits Emirati Dialect on Media to Citizens Only

In a significant move to preserve Emirati culture, the UAE has introduced a policy that permits only citizens to speak in the Emirati dialect on media channels.

This decision was discussed during a session of the Federal National Council (FNC) on April 16, 2025, following concerns about the distortion of the dialect and cultural symbols in various media representations.

The policy aims to protect the authenticity of Emirati identity, as noted by FNC member Naema Al Sharhan, who highlighted the growing misrepresentation of cultural symbols in media.

She emphasized the importance of accurate portrayals to maintain the depth of Emirati heritage.

Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, Chairman of the National Media Office, acknowledged previous violations and confirmed that actions have been taken against entities misrepresenting the UAE’s identity.

He reiterated the new guidelines that require individuals speaking in the Emirati dialect to be Emirati and dressed in national attire.

This policy comes amid changing media landscapes and aims to strengthen the representation of Emirati culture in the rapidly evolving media environment.
