DUBAI: The UAE’s new traffic law, Federal Decree-Law No. (14) of 2024, will come into effect on March 29, 2025, introducing significant changes to the conditions for obtaining and losing a driving license.

One of the notable updates is the reduction of the minimum age to obtain a driving license for cars and light vehicles from 18 to 17 years.

To be eligible for a driving license, applicants must meet several conditions, including passing a medical examination and successfully completing a driving test.

The Executive Regulations will further define the various types of licenses, their validity periods, and the specific conditions for each.

The law also outlines circumstances under which a driving license may be suspended or cancelled. These include cases where the license holder is deemed medically unfit to drive, or if a suspension is necessary to ensure traffic safety.

The procedures for suspending or cancelling licenses will be detailed in the Executive Regulations.

Moreover, the new law introduces strict penalties for serious offenses, such as reckless driving and driving under the influence, which can result in fines up to AED 100,000 and potential jail time.

The Traffic Control Authority will have the authority to arrest drivers committing severe violations, including causing injury or death.

Driving without a valid license carries severe penalties, with fines ranging from AED 2,000 to AED 10,000 for first-time offenses, increasing significantly for repeat offenses.

As the implementation date approaches, residents are urged to familiarize themselves with the new regulations to ensure compliance and safety on the roads.
