Current Regulations
Starting April 1, 2025, some international airlines, such as Singapore Airlines, will ban the use of power banks onboard.
In contrast, the GCAA allows power banks on UAE flights but stipulates specific rules that travelers must follow:
- Carry-On Only: Power banks are classified as spare batteries and must be kept in carry-on luggage. They are strictly prohibited in checked baggage due to safety concerns.
- Individual Protection: Each power bank must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. This means keeping them in their original packaging or using protective cases.
- Device Limit: Passengers are allowed to carry a maximum of 15 personal electronic devices (PEDs), including power banks. Each device should be packaged separately.
- Switch Off: All power banks must be completely switched off during the flight to minimize any risk of overheating or malfunction.
Airline-Specific Policies
While the GCAA sets the overarching rules, individual airlines may have additional guidelines. For instance, Emirates and Etihad Airways emphasize that power banks should only be stored in cabin luggage.
Passengers are encouraged to check with their airlines regarding the use of power banks for charging devices during the flight, as practices can vary.
Staying Informed
Travelers are advised to stay updated on the latest regulations as they can change based on security assessments and safety concerns.
Checking airline policies before departure is essential to ensure compliance and a hassle-free travel experience.
By understanding and adhering to these rules, passengers can safely carry their power banks while enjoying their journeys through the skies of the UAE.
