Nearly 6,000 New Urban Heritage Sites Registered in National Urban Heritage Register

The Saudi Heritage Commission has announced the registration of 5,969 new urban heritage sites in the National Urban Heritage Register, increasing the total number of registered sites to 34,171.

Distribution of New Sites
The newly registered sites are distributed as follows:
- Riyadh Region: 258 sites
- Makkah Region: 483 sites
- Qassim Region: 761 sites
- Asir Region: 3,893 sites
- Al-Baha Region: 499 sites
- Hail Region: 60 sites
- Jazan Region: 8 sites
- Al-Jouf Region: 4 sites
- Eastern Province: 3 sites

Objectives and Regulations
This registration aligns with regulations concerning antiquities and urban heritage, following the decision of the Heritage Commission’s Board of Directors to empower the authority’s CEO to register urban heritage sites. The aims include:
- Protection: Safeguarding these sites from encroachment and neglect.
- Preservation: Ensuring the longevity of these sites for future generations.
Strategic Plan
The commission views this initiative as part of a broader strategic plan to:
- Expand legal protection for heritage sites.
- Facilitate the rehabilitation of these sites, enhancing national identity and cultural value.
